Christmas in July...Weekend Craft Project

Since it's the weekend and many of you might have some free time, I thought I would share another wonderful Christmas craft I found. And if you don't have time now, come back closer to Christmas or even do it on the next Rudolph Day!

Miniature Presents*

What you'll need:

Wooden cubes
Acrylic paint in festive colors
Festive ribbon

White craft glue

How to make it:

Paint each cube with desired color. Let dry.
If you like, make polka dots on your cube using a toothpick dipped in paint. Let dry (see image).
Cut a piece of ribbon about 12 inches long. Find the center of the ribbon and place a painted cube onto it. Wrap the ribbon around the cube as you would a regular present.
Tie the ends into a bow, and then double knot the bow.
Take the two open ends of the ribbon and bring the up together, tie in a knot at the top to create the hanger.
Use a few dots of white glue to secure the ribbon to the cube.

Tips:

Wood cubes are available at your local craft supply store.
Let children pick whatever colors they like for the paint, festive or holiday colors are not a requirement!
If you prefer to make this a recycling project, use small boxes, such as a toothpick box.

It is believed that Halloween descended from a Celtic festival dating back at least 2,000 years. This festival, called Samhain (pronounced SAH-win or SOW-in) was an ancient celebration which marked the end of the harvest season on October 31.

The belief was that the date was an overlap between the living and the dead. It was believed that the dead would bring devastation to crops and spread sickness. In fear of these evil spirits, the people wore masks and costumes to seemingly "fit in" and appease these malicious creatures.

609 AD:

The Christian holiday of All Saints Day — known also as All Hallow’s Day — began on May 13.

Several other cultures and religions throughout history have been recorded with some type of commemoration for their dead.

Notably, Halloween customs are similar to the Hispanic observance of Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead, which can be traced to early Aztec times.

The New York Halloween Parade kicks off in 1974.

2000 (21st century):

Countless websites spring up to sell popular costumes, from Caityln Jenner, Donald Trump, and several scantily-clad creations, such as sexy corn.

Reinventions of the grotesque costumes that were once used remain, though the acts to ward off the dead have become a thing of tales in today’s Halloween celebrations.

FIRST HALLOWEEN COSTUMES -

Records of the precursor to Halloween—the Celtic new year celebration of Samhain (SAH-win)—are extremely threadbare, said Ken Nilsen, professor of Celtic studies at Canada's St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia.

"We don't have actual records telling us what it was like in ancient times, so our knowledge is based principally on folk customs that continued until recent centuries," Nilsen told National Geographic News in 2008.

However, it is known that Samhain dates back at least 2,000 years. This is based on an analysis of a Celtic bronze calendar which was discovered in the 1890s in Coligny, France, known as Gaul two millenia ago.

Samhain was, like our New Year's Eve, the festival celebrating the end of the Celtic year, a time of gathering the harvest and the rounding up of the animals.

It is believed the participants wore the hides of cattle and other livestock slaughtered at this time during the rituals of the held festivities. These celebrations most likey date back to even earlier pagan beliefs.

Inspiration for Ancient "Halloween Costumes" - Animal Spirits

According to ancient Roman writers, the tribes who lived in our current Germany and France participated in chaotic ceremonies. During these ceremonies, they wore the heads and skins of wild animals as costumes, believing this helped them to connect with animal spirits.

The custom of wearing animal hides at bonfire-lighted Celtic feast ceremonies survived until recent times, Nilsen notes.

"This was certainly done at Martinmas [the November 11 Christian feast of St. Martin] in Ireland and Scotland, which, in the old calendar, would be Halloween," he said.

"There might have been an excess of livestock, so it would make sense to slaughter an animal," Nilsen said.

Ancient Halloween Costumes - A Celebration of the Dead

Samhain night was also a celebration of the dead—the one time the spirits were believed to walk among the living.

The earliest rituals aren't known in detail, as there is no historical record. However, in more recent centuries families would leave out food for their ancestors at Samhain. Some would even have extra place settings for them.

It was also a night when people dressed in costumes to create mischief and confusion, according to Bettina Arnold of the Center for Celtic Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

"The spirits of the dead were impersonated by young men dressed with masked, veiled or blackened faces, dressed in white or disguises of straw," Arnold wrote in an essay titled "Halloween Customs in the Celtic World."

The costumes were not just intended to fool visited households. They also wore them to protect revelers from any These costumes were intended both to protect revelers from any evil spirits.

Nilsen of St. Francis Xavier University added: "People put on costumes which frequently included blackened faces and so on, representing spooks, demons, or whatever."

Halloween's Forerunner - Cross-Dressing and Horse-Heading

According to the University of Wisconsin's Arnold, on Samhain the boundary between the living and the dead was obliterated—as was the boundary between the sexes. Male youths would dress up as girls and vice versa, she wrote.

Mischievous young men in Wales would don Halloween drag and were referred to as hags.

Parts of Ireland had a tradition of a man dressed up in a white horse costume known as Lair Bhan—an ancient Celtic fertility symbol. This figure would lead boisterous parades at Samhain.

Author Katharine Clark wrote in An Irish Book of Shadows that Lair Bhan was represented using white sheets and a wooden head.

"Some heads could be quite elaborate, complete with snapping jaws controlled by the man upon whose shoulders the entire structure rested," Clark wrote.

Most Samhain costumes were not complete until appropriate accessories were added. These were usually lanterns made with hollowed-out turnips and candles.

Christmas began being celebrated on December 25 in 336 A.D. In 350, Pope Julius I declared December 25 the official date, and, in 529, Emperor Justinian declared Christmas a civic holiday. The biblical Jesus was not actually born on December 25. His birth probably took place in the summer months because shepherds and their flocks (the Nativity story portrays that they were present at the birth) would not have been roaming the hills at night in the winter. The reason the Pope chose December 25 as the official date was an attempt to incorporate the winter solstice festivals important to the cultures of pre-Christian Europe and Asia. Christian leaders believed that the best way to get the pagans to accept Christianity was to include their most deep rooted traditions in to Christian worship and celebration. Here are some popular pagan traditions that still survive today:

The Yule Log--this tradition has very deep pagan roots. The massive logs were burned in winter ceremonies in celebration of the sun. The selection of the log was crucial and included much ceremony because the log started the celebration fires and would last for the duration of the winter festival. To justify this pagan ritual, the Christian church gave it a new significance, that the fire signified the light that came from Heaven when Christ was born. The log was lit on Christmas Eve and left burning throughout the twelve days of Christmas (see below for the tradition behind the twelve days of Xmas).

Greenery--evergreens were revered by pagan people because they could stay alive during the cold dark winters. Considered magical, greenery decorated the inside and outside of houses during the winter solstice festivals. Church officials again justified the continued use of greenery by saying it symbolized Christ, who in his triumph over death gave the gift of everlasting life to the world. The most common Christmas greenery in use today: holly, ivy, mistletoe, and, of course, the most revered Christmas tree.

Mistletoe--this Christmas greenery was actually worshiped in pagan times. Druids and Romans thought it sacred, for healing and as a charm against evil. It was considered a symbol of peace; warring soldiers who found themselves under mistletoe quickly put down weapons and made a temporary truce. Ancient Britons hung mistletoe in their doorways to keep evil away. Whoever entered the house safely were given a welcome kiss--thus the custom of kissing under the mistletoe!

The Origins of Santa Claus (St. Nicholas)--as a young man, became Bishop of Myra while still a teen, earned him the nickname of Boy Bishop. Bishop Nicholas, through courage and generosity, touched the lives of many people, saving many from famine and despair. He founded an orphanage and became known for his love of and wonderful relationship with children. He was imprisoned by the Roman Empire during a time of religious persecution. He was finally reprieved by Emperor Constantine who was developing a softer attitude toward Christianity. Nicholas died on December 6 in approximately 343 A.D. (This day is still celebrated as St. Nicholas's Day in many European countries) Nicholas was very popular throughout Christendom and he was named the patron saint of children, sailors, thieves, hobos, pawnbrokers, and bankers--and also Russia, Greece, and Sicily.

Scrooge was better than his word. He did it all and infinitely more; and to Tiny Tim, who did not die, he was a second father. He became as good a friend, as good a master, and as good a man, as the good old city knew, or any other good old city, town, or borough, in the good old world.

Some people laughed to see the alteration in him, but he let them laugh, and little heeded them, for he was wise enough to know that nothing ever happens on this globe, for good, at which some people did not have their fill of laughter in the outset; and knowing that such as these would be blind anyway, he thought it quite as well that they should wrinkle up their eyes in grins, as have the malady in less attractive forms. Home for Christmas

This is meeting time again. Home is the magnet. The winter land roars and hums with the eager speed of return journeys. The dark is noisy and bright with late-night arrivals--doors thrown open, running shadows on snow, open arms, kisses, voices and laughter, laughter at everything and nothing. Inarticulate, giddying and confused are those original minutes of being back again. The very familiarity of everything acts like shock. Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion's starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don't see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Why not start list now (December 5) and do your Christmas giving sensibly, with regard to feelings of others, as well as for time, strength, and money? Leaving everything until last minute makes season harder for clerks and spoils holiday!

Khamchanh interpreted [for his friend Xiong Tong]: "He says it is quite strange, quite interesting but quite impossible for this man to penetrate the roof of his house with such a large sack of toys."
